The design requirements

With the earlier requirements in mind, we can formulate a list of features needed for the control system:

• Operator safety:
  • Interlock switches on access panels (closed with the panel closed)
  • Locking mechanism (mechanically locking access panel; redundant)
  • Emergency stop

• Laser cooling:
  • Pump relay
  • Temperature sensor in water tank (cooling capacity, inlet temperature)
  • Temperature sensor on valve cooling exhaust (mantle temperature)
  • Flow sensor (water flow speed; redundant)
• Air exhaust:
  • Fan relay
  • Air filter status (differential pressure sensor)
  • Fan speed (RPM)
• Laser module:
  • Laser power relay
  • Beam shutter (redundant)
• User interface
  • Alert indicators for:
    • Panel interlock
    • Air filter condition
    • Fan status
    • Pump ...
