Performing IPC between processes takes a learning curve, experience, and just a lot of work. With threads belonging to a process, IPC—communication—between them is as simple as writing and reading global memory (well, to be honest, it's not that simple, as we shall learn when we reach the topics on concurrency and synchronization in the next chapter; it's still less work conceptually and literally than processing IPC).
