Chapter 45. Utilization
Utilization (U) is just traffic intensity times the service channel count: U = ρc. Since you’re probably more familiar with utilization than traffic intensity, it might feel more comfortable to say it the other way around, that traffic intensity is just utilization with the service channel count divided out of it: ρ = U/c. Utilization and traffic intensity are exactly the same thing, just expressed in different units.
Since traffic intensity is always a number between 0 and 1, utilization is always a number between 0 and c. Utilization is often expressed as a percentage, using the “%” symbol to represent the quantity 0.01. For example, a system with four service channels will have traffic intensities and utilizations in the following ranges:
| Range (c = 4) | ||
| Metric | Low | High |
| Traffic intensity | 0 | 1 |
| Utilization | 0 | 4 |
| Utilization as % | 0% | 400% |
