It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
3.6. Using SMIT with devices
The SMIT fast path smitty devices allows you to use the SMIT menu interface to do the following:
Install or configure devices added after IPL.
Remove devices.
List existing devices.
Change or show the characteristics of devices.
Perform problem determination on devices.
