U.S. Government Resources

The U.S. Government has been a longtime supporter (if not always adopter) of incident response programs. As such, it makes numerous information resources available to incident response teams. Here is a list of many of these resources:

FedCIRC, http://www.fedcirc.gov

Formed in the early 1990’s, the FedCIRC is an incident response resource that is available to the entire U.S. Federal Government by way of the General Services Agency.

National Infrastructure Protection Center (NIPC), http://www.nipc.gov

Chartered during the Clinton administration in the mid-1990’s, NIPC is a Department of Justice clearinghouse and coordinator of computer crimes investigations.

U.S. Department of Justice Computer Crimes Section, http://www.cybercrime.gov

Although closely related to the NIPC, the Department of Justice’s Computer Crimes Section represents U.S. prosecutors of computer crimes.

Department of Energy Computer Incident Advisory Capability, http://www.ciac.org

Among the early U.S. Government adopters of incident response operations is the Department of Energy’s Computer Incident Advisory Capability (CIAC) team. Although it principally serves the Department of Energy, its web site has plenty of information that is of general interest, including one of the best virus hoax repositories in existence.
