Christos Cotsakos likes to joke that when he first came across VCs (venture capitalists) in Silicon Valley, his heart missed a beat. The last time he'd encountered the acronym was as a soldier in Vietnam 30 years earlier.

In fact, jokes and Vietnam are two distinct but essential facets of the E*Trade CEO. A vibrant and vivacious personality, Cotsakos, 50, is unlike any other internet entrepreneur by virtue of his background. A working class son of a Greek immigrant, he was a high school dropout, before finding glory and his will to live on the battlefields of the small south-east Asian country.
