Laterality
The meaning of the word lateral is ‘of, or relating to, the side,
away from the median axis’. In general, the term laterality can
refer to any preference for one side of the body over another.
Probably the most common example of this, and one to which we
can all relate, is whether a person is left-handed or right-handed.
If we were to remove a brain from the skull, we would see that
it is made up of two almost identical hemispheres. These two
hemispheres are connected by a bridge, or interface, of millions of
nerve fibres called the corpus callosum, which allows them to
