An age-old question asks, are leaders born or made? I think they are made through a set of circumstances and situations that flicks a switch and brings out the best in them. So does the same apply to passion?
I don’t believe so. I believe we are all born passionate and at some stage during our life either we fuel the fire or we let it die down to nothing. I look at my two daughters and see the passion in their eyes for the things they love to do. I see adults who after so many years reconnect with their passion and get a second lease on life with energy to burn regardless of their age.
So how do people lose their passion? My take on this is that our lives are divided into four areas …
There are things in our life that we loveto do — the things that give us the greatest joy, that we are passionate about, that energise us, that recharge our batteries. Then there are things that we liketo do. These things give us pleasure, but we are not as passionate about them as we are about the things we love to do.
There are also things in our life that we haveto do to reach a goal or achieve an outcome. They don’t give us much joy or energy, but we know that it is all part of the process and the price we need to pay to get things done.
Finally, there are things in life that we hateto do. If we had a choice we would avoid doing them; we might delegate ...
