I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
CHAPTER 27Readers are leaders!
The prolific and wonderful author John Maxwell once said: ‘Readers are Leaders’. I believe if you want to lead your life, you need to read books that inspire, inform and offer insights — then you can start to truly lead yourself. The first personal development book I ever read was How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie. That book was a great catalyst for me, making me aware of what I needed to do to get along with people.
I was never a great reader at school, yet today I am reading more than ever before. I have a thirst for knowledge because I know that I have found great answers, wonderful solutions and transformational strategies in books. In other words, I have found a better version of myself in the books I have read. I have found strengths that I possess, weaknesses I need to work on and answers to questions that have perplexed me. I have also read books I thought were terrible, only to read them again two years later to think they were fantastic.
Through research we know that the average person reads less than one book a year. Maybe that could be why many of them are living an average life, with average results. The best minds I know are people who read a lot; they consume knowledge and let their mind be stretched.
