How to do it...

What we're going to do in this particular recipe is go through a few steps on how to break a WPA that happens be using a weak passphrase:

  1. Open up a Terminal window and find the name of the wireless adapter. Most likely this adapter will be named something along the lines of wlan0. You should use ifconfig or iwconfig for this.
  2. Now we enable monitor mode on the interface noted in step one using   airmon-ng:
airmon-ng start wlan0 

With some wireless cards you may get an error message when you attempt to enable monitor mode on them. If this happens use the airmon-ng check kill command.

  1. Next, use the following command to view a list of target access points as well as the clients attaching to those access points:
 airodump-ng ...
