I use a couple of learning platforms, but I'm on O'Reilly more than anybody else. When you're there, you start learning. I'm never disappointed.I'm always learning. So when I got on to O'Reilly, I was like a kid in a candy store. There are playlists. There are answers. There's on-demand training. It's worth its weight in gold, in terms of what it allows me to do.
Phase one – configuring monitor mode
The first step we need to perform for breaking WEP is to switch our card to monitor mode, as we did previously. We need to do this in order to allow the network interface to detect every packet that is being transmitted by nearby networks. To do this on a network interface named wlan0:
- airodump-ng start wlan0 9 (the 9 will lock the card to listening on channel 9, but this can be changed to the channel on the access point you wish to observe. You can discover the channel of the access point you wish to target by running the command without the channel designator).
- Press Enter.
