아마존은 AWS 람다Lambda를 출시하여 추상화된 서버리스 컴퓨팅을 제공하는 최초의 클라우드 서비스 제공자가 되었다. 서버리스는 클라우드 컴퓨팅에 대한 새로운 접근 방법으로, 개발자가 클라우드에서 서비스 아래의 인프라를 관리하거나 런타임 환경을 설정하지 않아도 이벤트 기반event-driven 함수들을 실행할 수 있도록 지원한다. 클라우드 제공자는 배치된 함수의 배포, 확장, 비용 청구를 모두 관리한다.
서버리스는 개발자와 클라우드 엔지니어를 끌어들이는 유행어가 되었다. 서버리스 컴퓨팅의 가장 가까운 구현체는 바로 서비스형 함수FaaS다. FaaS를 사용하면 개발자는 단지 함수를 작성한 코드를 배포하고 어떤 이벤트가 해당 함수를 호출할 것인지 결정하기만 하면 된다. 굉장히 직관적인 프로세스처럼 보이지만 프로덕션 수준의 애플리케이션을 개발하기 위해서는 특정 측면들을 고려해야만 한다. 그래야만 복잡한 시스템을 구현하게 되는 것을 피할 수 있다.
