Serious study of management and leadership began to develop around the turn of the twentieth century. Both fields developed mindsets or paradigms that guided researchers for nearly fifty years. Calls for a shift in the fields began to be heard in the late 1940s (Dahl, 1947; Simon, 1947; Stogdill, 1948; Waldo, 1948).
