Competency-based approaches emphasize the role of individuals in leadership processes and applied utility in theory development. Although they are related to trait theories (discussed in Chapters 1 and 3), the newer iterations developed from both academic sources (Boyatzis, 1982; Howard & Bray, 1988; McClelland, 1965, 1985) and applied quality management literature (e.g., Thornton & Byham, 1982).
