Introduction

Quoted from “Review of Soame Jenyns, ‘A Free Enquiry into the Nature and Origin of Evil.’” (http://andromeda.rutgers.edu/~jlynch/Texts/jenys.html) In this somewhat lengthy critique Dr. Johnson goes on to observe, “… how will either of those [better enjoying life or better enduring it] be put more in our power by him who tells us that we are puppets of which some creature, not much wiser than ourselves, manages the wires!” One important aspect of leadership, in our approach, is the leader’s self-confidence—belief that he or she can have an impact, rather than being a puppet of others—and the leader’s capacity to develop such self-confidence in followers.
