I am suspicious of the notion of natural-born talent. I’ve been told it’s out there, that some people seem to come into this world leaning so much more powerfully in one direction than others that you can’t help but notice. We call them prodigies. I’ve never met one. I have, however, met many people who are astonishingly creative. Far from being prodigies, they’re as ordinary as you and me—just plain folk, as they say. If there is something about them that makes them more than ordinary in their creative lives, it’s an uncommon drive to keep chasing the thing for which they are now celebrated.
