When I was 12, my mother enrolled me in the French immersion program at school. What little I had learned of the language to that point was useless when faced with all-French-all-the-time and a lexicon of real-world words I’d never had reason to learn. As the comedian Eddie Izzard once pointed out, le singe est sur la branche (the monkey is on the branch) is very hard to work into everyday conversations unless you travel to heavily wooded areas in France with your own monkey.
