I previously quoted photographer Stephen Shore’s belief that a good photographer combines interesting perceptions with an understanding of how the camera could translate the world into a photograph. I presume he specifically means a photograph that reflects those interesting perceptions. The latter is easy to understand, even if understanding how a camera sees the world is not as simple. But the former, the idea of interesting perceptions, is less clear. It’s a little harder to pin down, and I think this is in part because it’s just so damn subjective.
