12.1.3 Terminology
A variety of terms and informal colloquial phrases are used in the description of lossless audio data
compression. In this chapter several of these terms may be used interchangeably and it is helpful
to keep this in mind so that no special distinction is to be inferred unless specific mention is given
in the text. A summary of these terms is given next.
Lossless compression and lossless packing both refer to methods for reducing the number of
