In this chapter we describe the compression schemes used for facsimile compression. We also
briefly describe how these compression schemes have been incorporated into various international
standards.
20.1 A BRIEF HISTORY
One of the earliest applications of lossless compression was to the compression of facsimile,
perhaps because facsimile transmission is one of the oldest forms of digital transmission still in
existence. The first facsimile machines were patented soon after Samuel Morse's patenting of the
