10.10. Summary

This chapter explored the problem of keeping your personal information from falling into the wrong hands when browsing the web. After detailing some of the reasons web browsing is often insecure, I described the use of SSL to encrypt communication with specific sites. I explained how best to store the personal information (including usernames and passwords) that you type into web forms and discussed ways of avoiding malware and phishing schemes. Because your Mac itself stores considerable information about your web activities, I showed how to keep that data private and also investigated ways of keeping your identity secret from the sites you visit (and anyone watching your web traffic). I rounded out the chapter with a look at ways to block ads (which sometimes enable advertisers to track you) from appearing in your browser.
