5.5. Using Keychain Access

Most of the time, you can store and use items in your keychain without ever actually seeing or directly interacting with your keychain itself. But you may need to change a password, delete an item, alter an application's permissions to use a keychain item, create a new keychain, or perform any of numerous other maintenance tasks on a keychain and its contents. You can do all this with a utility Apple includes with Mac OS X called Keychain Access.

To follow the instructions in this section, open Keychain Access, which is located in /Applications/Utilities.

5.5.1. Customizing the view

Keychain Access uses a familiar layout, with a sidebar on the left and a list view occupying the main part of the window, as shown in Figure 5.8.

You can adjust the view in several ways:

  • To hide or show the list of keychains at the top of the sidebar, choose View Hide Keychains or View Show Keychains, respectively, or press +K to toggle the view. (I recommend leaving the list of keychains visible all the time.)

  • To hide or show the details about the selected item just above the list, choose View Hide Summary or View Show Summary, respectively.
