Chapter 3THE FIRST OBLIGATION OF A MANAGER: GET RESULTS

All managers know their job is to get results, but results mean different things to different managers. When I used the word “results” with my managers, I meant quantifiable and measurable outcomes from their actions that contributed to the eventual achievement of companywide goals. I did not consider the number of e-mails received or sent, or the number of hours logged in the office, as results. Managers’ results are measured against their goals.

I want to be clear that I view goals, objectives, and targets as one and the same thing. I’m familiar with companies that reserve the word “goals” for their strategic plan and the word “objectives” ...
