In the first chapter of this book, we discussed the reasons for and the evolution of Master Data Management and Customer Data Integration. We also offered a working definition of MDM. Specifically, we defined Master Data Management as the framework of processes and technologies aimed at creating and maintaining an authoritative, reliable, sustainable, accurate, and secure data environment that represents a holistic version of the truth for master data. Master data are those entities, relationships, and attributes that are critical for an enterprise and foundational to key business processes and application systems across multiple lines of business.
