Chapter 11 Ideal Fluid at Rest and in Motion

All living creatures live inside fluids. Animals and humans inhabiting lands are immersed in a sea of gaseous fliud, the air, which provides them with the oxygen needed for their biological existence. Marine life is sustained in the second type of fluid, namely liquid called water. The difference between the two types of fluid is roughly this. Gas is compressible, liquid is not. The common property shared by all fluids is that they cannot sustain shear forces, which solids can. It is due to this property that a fluid, when confined within the boundaries of a container, takes the shape of the boundary with which it is in contact and exerts pressure all over the bounding surface that prevents it from ...
