After you’ve completely built a structure, you may notice that it’s a bit dark inside and outside. Don’t fret: This chapter tells you exactly how to add some light to a building.

Determining a Light Source

If you’re in the dark about what might work best as a light source, don’t worry. This section shines a little light on that topic. You have plenty of options to choose from, such as torches, glowstone, and lava, to name only a few.

Block light sources

As you can see throughout this book, Minecraft uses lots of different kinds of blocks. Some of them — glowstone, redstone lamp, and netherrack, to be specific — give off light. The next few sections dive into the specifics of each block light type.

Glowstone

Glowstone is a common way to produce light. To make glowstone, you need 4 glowstone dust — which makes sense. As for how to get hold of glowstone dust, that’s a bit more complicated.

You can get glowstone dust one of three ways: Trade a villager for it, kill a witch, or mine it from the Nether. Note that not all villagers trade glowstone, but some do. If you’re having trouble finding a villager willing to trade glowstone dust, move on to Option # 2: ...
