Wrapping Up
We got to know UDP throughout this chapter. It’s a different beast compared to TCP. You learned about their differences and started to play around with UDP. To do that, we built an application to collect metrics, made of clients and a server communicating via UDP. This exercise showed us how to use the gen_udp Erlang module and how to perform basic operations such as sending and receiving data.
We covered a lot of ground in this chapter, but we still need to improve our metric-collecting application to handle some of the more challenging properties of UDP, such as packets not being necessarily ordered or guaranteed to arrive at the destination. Take a break, and when you’re ready, turn the page and dive in.
