Wrapping Up
At last, we’ve reached the end of the book. WebSocket was the last prominent network protocol to explore. In this chapter, you learned about the WebSocket protocol itself, diving a bit deeper than usual into the binary protocol and the upgrade process. Then, we built a silly game to play around with the real-time functionality that the protocol enables.
WebSocket is going to stick around. While HTTP/2 technically provides some overlapping features—server-initiated pushes and persistent connections—WebSocket is the de facto standard for real-time communication, and that is not expected to change anytime soon.
