HTTP/1.1 Protocol Basics
HTTP has a long and complicated history.[127] Suffice to say, HTTP/1 was released as a textual protocol in 1996, followed by some improvements in HTTP/1.1. HTTP/2 and HTTP/3, however, are binary protocols and take a wildly different approach. There’s also HTTP/0.9, the pre-1.0, early-1990s version of the protocol. HTTP has evolved significantly since its inception, and the HTTP landscape has gotten wider and more complex.
At the time of writing, there are two versions of HTTP that dominate the web: HTTP/1.1 and HTTP/2.
