Why sentiment analysis is difficult

Early efforts in sentiment analysis faced many hurdles, due to the presence of subtle nuances in human languages. The same word can often covey a different meaning, depending on the context. Take for example the following two sentences:

We know that the sentiment of the first sentence is negative, as it probably means that the building is literally on fire. On the other hand, we know that the sentiment of the second sentence is positive, since it is unlikely that the person is literally on fire.
