1.1 Optical Fiber

Optical fibers are used most often as a flexible medium to transmit light. The external diameter of optical fibers is several hundreds of microns, and the most commonly used optical fiber in communication has a tiny diameter of only 125 μm. It makes optical fiber have inherent dimension advantage compared with other information transmission medium. As a cylindrical waveguide, the optical fibers usually have two layers with different refractive indices to achieve total internal reflection.
