The total internal reflection occurs when light propagates from optically denser medium to optically rarer medium. Based on this phenomenon and appropriate design, light at specific wavelengths can be held in a microcavity, as shown in Figure 10.1a. The supported electrical field distribution solution of light is frequently referred as the whisper‐gallery‐mode (WGM) [1], and it is shown as a series of resonant dips in the transmission spectrum of the detection optical fiber, shown in Figure 10.1b. When the absorption loss of the material is very small, an extremely high Q‐factor can be achieved for WGM microcavity.
