Understanding Relationships

The dynamics of relationships in organizations are in many ways similar to those of relationships outside organizations with perhaps one major exception; that is, organizational relationships are often influenced by organizational politics and challenging performance goals. In a sometimes treacherous sea of political motives and performance pressure, we can still build and nurture relationships when guided by trust, fair exchanges, and sound negotiation practices.

Bernie Madoff was a self-made Wall Street financial mogul who rose from meager beginnings trading penny stocks in his own firm to become a major player on Wall Street and chairman of the NASDAQ stock exchange. A hero to many because of his personal success story as well as his above-market returns, he used his trustworthy demeanor to attract many wealthy private, institutional, and not-for-profit investors. Madoff now resides behind bars after pleading guilty to robbing his clients of over $65 billion in a Ponzi scheme that lasted several decades.

People like him become sort of like chameleons. They are very good at impression management.
