Understanding Exposure
The Alabama Hills lie east of the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Owens Valley, California. This
beautiful formation of jumbled rocks is a photographer’s delight.
For this photo of the Alabama Hills, with Mount Whitney in the background, I knew that my
exposure really didn’t matter because nothing was in motion (meaning I didn’t care about
shutter speed), and everything was in focus at infinity (so I didn’t care about aperture), so I
used Landscape mode (essentially, a version of Programmed Automatic with the flash disabled
that tends to select middle-of-the-road aperture and shutter speed settings).
18–700mm zoom lens at 27mm, 1/200 of a second at f/10 and ISO 200, tripod mounted.

Who could wish for a better, or more poetic, floral subject than Cherry blossoms in a light rain
on an overcast day? And yet, this is a technically and aesthetically challenging subject: wind
can make long exposures problematic, and precision of focus and depth of field is critical.
With this image, I decided that I was looking for a little bit of depth of field, but not a great
deal of depth of field.
I wanted the anthers of the Cherry blossom to be in focus, and the flower to be slightly out
