Individuals with type 1 diabetes (T1D) must constantly monitor their blood glucose levels and adjust insulin delivery, either through injections of long- and rapid-acting insulin or adjustments to a pump that continuously delivers rapid-acting insulin. It is desirable to develop a closed-loop automated insulin delivery system that responds to blood glucose changes and compensates for meals and exercise by changing the insulin delivery rates. This module discusses the challenges of developing a closed-loop artificial pancreas (or automated insulin delivery system) and includes examples of low-order models and controller tuning applied to a simulation model of an individual with T1D.
