Scratch layers are temporary vector layers that remain present while the QGIS project you are working on is open, but are lost upon closing—they are stored in memory. Scratch layers are useful when you want to quickly draw some features on a map. The benefit is that you don't need to think about file formats and locations for your temporary data. If you find you need to keep the layer, it can be exported as a permanent file—we will look at this in the next section.
To create a scratch layer, select Layer | Create Layer | New Temporary Scratch Layer. Select Polygon / CurvePolygon as Geometry type, as shown in the following screenshot:
