Abstract
Applied research is a major aspect of cyber security. Security is largely an application of knowledge to achieve desired results and cyber security is the application of security to cyber space. Applied research is the step in the research lifecycle in which we understand how well we used our knowledge to engineer a system to solve a pressing problem and generate predictable outcomes.
This chapter covers experimental methods for performing applied research to quantify the effectiveness of applying scientific knowledge to a specific problem.
