The Storage Management Problem
Currently, no end-to-end software development standards for the storage industry are available. As a result, vendors have to develop individual, proprietary interfaces to all the other components in the system, thereby making the management process highly complex. Customers face vendor lock-in with difficult choices between competing systems. For example, Veritas has to develop different interfaces for Sun StorEdge, EMC, and CLARiiON. In addition, storage management is difficult, because each vendor chooses a different user interface, and there is no simple way today to administer all the server and storage resources necessary to ensure optimum performance for the entire system.
