Imagine yourself sitting at the executive C-suite table of a large company. The CEO turns to their CIO and asks, “How is our digital transformation going?”
The CIO proudly responds, “We have implemented 55 use cases and are working on 18 more!” The CFO appears slightly ticked off and retorts, “We have been investing a fair amount in this, and while I know digital is important, I don’t see the returns.”
The business unit leaders don’t say anything. They are too far removed from the use cases in their business and their body language clearly says, “Another IT project that won’t deliver any business value.”
The CEO continues, “What about AI? Should we not be investing more in it? The board keeps asking me about this.” The CIO jumps in again: “Sure, but first we need our data to be in good shape; that’s why I am proposing investments in a data cleaning effort.”
“How long will that take?” the CEO probes. After a short pause, the CIO responds, “Our estimate is that it will take a few years to complete.” More eyes roll. The CEO is thinking, “Maybe I need to hire a chief AI officer?”
