A group of top leaders is gathered in a room. There is excited chatter. The solutions team is going to give a demo of their latest AI agent. The tech lead is sharing her screen, which is being projected to the front of the room.
“This is going to completely change the way we do business,” the CEO says, eager to see the demo.
The tech lead asks the AI agent to retrieve some documents, synthesize the most important points, and recommend next actions to take. The spinning wheel appears on the screen as the agent “works” on the command. There’s some nervous laughter in the room, but the agent comes back quickly with a synthesis and some good recommendations.
Various people take turns asking questions, and the AI agent comes back with good answers.
“This is fantastic,” the CEO says. “How long until we roll this out to all our people and how much is it going to boost our productivity?”
Hmmm. Good questions.
We’ve all been in those meetings where a demo doesn’t go well. But the more common—and expensive—issue is that the demo of an MVP goes well, but the rollout collapses as it tries to scale. Early successes often hide the challenges of scaling.
