Note that the hand fits into two squares: one for the palm, and one for the fingers. Each finger in turn is made up of three rectangles, while the thumb is made up of two. The wrist is slightly narrower than the hand.
In order to create variations, all you have to do is shift the rectangles that make up the fingers and change the shape of the square making up the palm.
