The 2012 preamplifier has a flat gain stage after the RIAA phono section that can be switched from 0 to +20 dB in 5 dB steps. This was mainly aimed at accommodating the very wide range of MC cartridge sensitivities that exists. It is equally applicable to optimising the gain for MM cartridges, but these vary much less in output.
Analysis of gains and signal levels showed that if the MC head amplifier had a fixed gain of +30 dB, followed by an MM RIAA stage with a fixed gain of +30 dB, overload could never occur in either of those stages, no matter what combination of cartridge and technically possible recorded velocities was used.
