Figure 7-6 shows the reactive obsolescence management guideline regarding how to implement a reactive obsolescence management system within an organization affected by obsolete parts.

1 A National Stock Number, or NATO Stock Number (NSN), is a 13-digit numeric code, identifying all standardized material items of supplies as they have been recognized by all NATO countries.

2 Alternate source includes parts from a different manufacturer (not already in the applicable technical data package) that meet the part specifications.

3 Emulation cost values provided by Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) are not from the DMEA survey and represent the historical costs to the DLA to emulate a part.

4 Design refresh refers to changes that “have to be done” in order for the system functionality to remain useable. Redesign means “want to be done” system changes, which include new technologies to accommodate system functional growth and new technologies to replace and improve the existing functionality of the system (Herald, 2000).

5 The manufacturer of the part may change process or other parameters (for which a PCN may not be issued) that affect the uprateability of the part.
