Abstract
This chapter revisits the exact three-dimensional (3-D) approach to study internal instability in layered media based on the model of a piecewise-homogeneous medium, in which the behaviour of each component of the material is described by the 3-D equations of solid mechanics. The results of this approach can be used as a benchmark for simplified models.
