Once the functionality requirements have been defined, the next step is to identify one or more open source candidates. This can be a very challenging task because open source projects typically are not able to mount a marketing program to make potential users aware of the product's existence and capabilities. The free, anonymous nature of open source makes it much more difficult to easily identify products that you would consider—if you only knew about them. Consequently, this requires you to take a more active role in seeking out candidate products.
