SOME PEOPLE KNOW from a very young age that they want to be a nurse. As children or adolescents, they yearn to help people heal. They feel it in their bones.
I am not one of these people. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a journalist, not a nurse. I loved seeing bylines in newspapers and magazines, and I felt titillated at the thought that hundreds, thousands, even millions of people would see those words on the page and respond to them.
