THE SOUND OF a door slamming awoke us. What was going on? I glanced at our bedside clock. It was 2:30 in the morning. “Mom, Dad,” my younger daughter, Hilary, called from the front door. She sounded upset.
“Hilary,” my husband, Tom, said groggily.
