Foreword

Leaders play a significant role in our society, as in any society. They shape our morality and our ethical imperatives; they are alchemists of the mind, and they can unite the people in pursuit of the worthiest of goals. Given that, it is almost absurd to recognize that after four decades of research on leadership we still cannot claim an integrated understanding of it. Excuse the self-indulgence of self-quoting, but in 1959 I wrote: “Of all the hazy and confounding areas in social psychology, leadership theory undoubtedly contends for top nomination.
