A MONOPOD IS basically a stick used to help support a camera and lens. They make it easier to hold heavier lenses and keep them stable. While monopods are not nearly as stable as tripods and can’t be used for long exposures, they are very helpful when you’re shooting sports and action. Check out the sidelines of any professional sporting event and you will see the photographers with those huge lenses all supported by monopods. The weight of those lenses makes it difficult to handhold them for long periods of time.
In my experience, any time you are using a lens with a focal length of 300mm or more, it is a good idea to use a monopod. ...
