Dialogue vs. Voice-Over
In the film world dialogue is typically recorded on location and sometimes re-recorded in a sound booth or on a soundstage in a process called ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement). ADR is the process of syncing a voice-over performance to a pre-rendered video or animation (much like Foley syncs to picture). For games, however, the dialogue often does not need visible sync to a character. In the cases where sync is necessary, the dialogue is usually recorded first, leaving animators to animate mouth movements to sync with recorded speech.
